About 10 or so days ago Facebook started emailing page admins a weekly page update. I was curious about what information would be included in this email but didn’t receive one until a week later.
The email I received was actually quite long. I realized that I am still an Admin on almost every Facebook page that I have worked on.
It occurred to me that I should email my clients and ask them whether or not they still want me to be an admin on their pages. That, of course, will go on my list of things to do when I’m really super bored, which is basically never ;-) No, seriously, I will contact them. Personally, I think if someone is done working on your fan page that you should remove them as an admin. I also look to be removed when I have finished the work because I don’t want any any errors that are caused by the client or by Facebook to be blamed on me. If I’m not an admin I have no access to make any edits so the error couldn’t possibly be my fault.
Anyway … the email wasn’t that exciting. If you are monitoring your fan page, which you should be doing or it’s not going to really work for you, you will already know the information contained in the email. The email looked like this:
Here is this week’s summary for the Facebook Page: (Anti) Social Development
+36 Fans this week (745 total Fans)
10 Wall Posts, Comments, and Likes this week (23 last week)

I liked seeing the numbers for new fans for the week and the number of visits but somehow I expected this email to be more exciting or prettier or something. I guess with Facebook we should be happy with what we get.
And if I was actively working on the pages that I am an Admin of, it would be useful to see all the stats information in one email.
The email also reminded me that I had started a fan page on another topic and then didn’t do anything with it – I should probably spend some time on that project.
Are you a Facebook page admin? Did you receive the page update email? Did you think it was useful?

Yes, I received the update on my email, however, as you said, those are information every user should know. However, I believe this comes as an advertising method for their Facebook Ads, just a hunch though. :)

You’re probably right – that’s what it comes down to with FB. :-)

Actually I was thinking – The email also reminded me that I had started a fan page on another topic and then didn’t do anything with it – was maybe the reason for them.
I’m sure they’re finding thousands of neglected pages and they don’t like it. :)

That’s a good point Dennis – I’m sure they are tired of wading through all of it.

Purges are healthy, and with THAT many members?? Pulease. I’d bet the “dead” pages are in the super high 6 to low 7 figures.

I did receive one and thought it was interesting.
I have a question for you Kim. I set up a fan page for a friend. I did all the work, then added him as an admin. Can he now remove me as an admin? For some reason, I was thinking he couldn’t and that in the future, I’d have folks set it up first, then add me as an admin to make changes.
I’d love it if I could be removed because I can’t comment on his fan page updates! I mean, I can but it looks like it’s coming from the fan page and not from me.

Hi Tracy – You can’t :( You are the owner of that fan page until FB addresses the issue of transfer of page ownership – it’s a big problem.

Nah, I thought it was a waste of time and opted out. The last thing I need is more emails!

Hi Vered – lol. I’ve actually spent some time this week unsubscribing from newletters rather than just deleting them. The email is just too much.

Kim,
Have you found any new way to get things on your wall? I was using the custom apps and then through the boxes tab I could post on my wall; but it appears that the change or elimination of boxes has taken away the option. I say change or elimination because the pages where I had made “boxes” a tab; still has the tab, but not the functionality and where I didn’t make “boxes” a tab; it is no more.
In fact with the >> pull down from the tabs list, I am getting no response. Have you seen that as well?
Thanks,
Tom

Kim Woodbridge says
Hi Tom – It seems that even though boxes haven’t been formally removed yet they are no longer working properly.
The pull down on the tabs list should be working though – either Facebook is being buggy or you will want to clear your browser cache and restart it.

Great tips Kim! very helpful indeed. Found 3 of those which I’d been looking for over weeks. I just wanted to know if you also know how to make the “Become a fan” which is now “like” button on the custom fbml page?
Best regards

Hi Sambhav – I haven’t tried it yet but someone told me they were having trouble getting it to work last weekend. Have you seen a working example?
The info on how to (theoretically) do it is here
