Although I didn’t have my posts planned out this past week like I normally do, I did manage to keep track of the awesome links that I found. This week I have a WordPress User Guide, WordPress hacks, SEO information, a list of Twitter resources, my article at Environmental Graffiti, information about helping a loved one with a mental illness, and more information on Train for Humanity and Darfur. Hopefully you will find something useful or inspirational.
How to Upgrade WordPress Manually
Anyone who’s been visiting for awhile knows that I’m not a big fan of the Auto-Upgrade plugin for WordPress and that I prefer upgrading manually. I’m not against the plugin. I think it’s made it possible for more people to upgrade their own WordPress installations. I prefer manually upgrading because I have more control (and I’m not a control freak, just a scheduling freak) and I am better able to troubleshoot the problem when something goes wrong with the upgrade.
And things do go wrong. Frequently. That being said, the Auto-Upgrade Plugin works fine when the upgrade is minor, such as from a .1 to a .2 version. But if you are upgrading from WordPress 2.0 to 2.6.2, I highly recommend you do it manually. If you aren’t familiar with the process, I recommend someone do the upgrade for you.
WordPress – Use the Maintenance Mode Plugin When Working on Your Site
If you are anything like me, you frequently make changes to your site. You edit the code, test new templates, and try a variety of plugins. And if you’re like me, you make mistakes and hope that no one is viewing your site when you’ve temporarily trashed it.
After numerous temporary and minor disasters I now use the maintenance mode plugin.
Once maintenance mode is activated, a page will go up saying that your site is undergoing maintenance and to try back in a hour. If you are logged into your site, you will still see the site normally and the changes you are making while your visitors will see the maintenance page.
(Anti) Social-Lists 10/5/08
Well, it’s already been another week. It’s hard to believe – they just seem to be flying by. This week I feature more about how WordPress has changed lives, a gorgeous site redesign, giant dolls, the blogging process, working with photos and creepy ads.
- WordCamp Portland – How WordPress Changes Lives – Lorelle Van Fossen gave a presentation at WordCamp Portland about how WordPress changes lives. This was part of the same presentation that involved Glenda Hyatt Watson. This part of the presentation, however, is about regular people like you and me. If you don’t want to watch the entire video, please watch for about 30 seconds starting at the 6th minute ;-)
- Redesign at Perishable Press – Jeff at Perishable Press redesigned his site. Please visit his site and marvel at the beauty of the design and at his design skills. I used to visit the site to learn advanced WordPress hacks – now I just site there and stare at the design.
WordPress: How Has Blogging With WordPress Changed Your Life
Has blogging or using WordPress changed your life? Is the change a positive one?
As I mentioned on Monday, blogging with WordPress has raised my confidence, given me a supportive online community, and enabled me to earn some money freelancing.
These accomplishments, however, pale in comparison to how WordPress has changed Glenda Watson Hyatt’s life. I know this video has been posted in my places this week, but I wanted to make it available here as well, in case any of my readers haven’t seen it yet.
