Did you know your twitter profile page has a page rank? I didn’t realize this until this week when someone tweeted about it. I access twitter via tweetdeck so I rarely see the site or my profile page.
So, I went to check the rank of my profile page and was really surprised by the results.
The page rank of my twitter profile page is 5!! My site is only a 3.
Are there more quality links to my profile page? Does it contain better content? Am I better known for twitter than for my blog?
Perhaps this video will provide some enlightenment. Google explains the factors involved in determining the page rank of a twitter profile page. According to google it has nothing to do with the number of followers you have but it my spot tests, profiles of people with more followers tend to have a higher page rank. This could just be a coincidence based on the people I chose to test.
So, what do you think? Did you know your profile page had a page rank? Do you even care? ;-)
Dave says
Hi Kim. As far as I can see, the only reason the PR of a page is useful is when you want to get a link placed on that page.
Twitter kindly lets us all put links to our websites on our profile pages which is great. But the link is a nofollow, which is not so great.
So unless I’m missing something (which I often am) the PR of a Twitter profile page is worthless.

Kim Woodbridge says
Hi Dave,
I’m sure it is worthless, which is why is surprised me that each profile even has one. And that google has made a video about how they determine it ;-)
Kurt Avish says
Exactly as Dave said. If the link would have been a do follow things would have been more than great lol.
I am trying to check the pagerank but I get it the same 9/10 for the base twitter page and also my twitter page. Which PR check tool site you used? Am using checkpagerank.net

It’s easier to rank a page that is actually a sub page of twitter.com! I am guessing this is why this happens. Moreover, think about how many links have the “in reply to” pointing to your profile (where the update is)…

Hi Stratos,
But does it even matter if all the links are nofollow? I want my blog to rank higher …
Writer Dad says
I didn’t know, but I suppose if all the links are no follow it really doesn’t matter. My Twitter pagerank is lower than my blog’s.

Hi Manshu – LOL – Yeah, that’s a not a well constructed sentence.
There’s a good reason I’m not a freelance writer ;-)
Stuart Foster says
Same here. My blog has a PR of 3 but my Twitter page is a solid 5. I have no idea why this is and I have tried to do a variety of metrics on the page to determine the reason. I think it has to be easier to rank on a Twitter subpage then a stand alone blog. (At least that’s what I keep telling myself)

Hi Stuart – I guess that makes sense – that a subpage of a high ranking page will have a better chance to have a high ranking. I can’t really figure out why else it would rank higher either.

Kikolani says
I didn’t know that… I thought the page rank of the profiles was the same as the site, but that is interesting. Maybe those comments where you can enter your Twitter id on DoFollow sites make a difference in link building, along with getting listed in the directories.

Hi Kristi – I don’t think of that – the profile / ID links in comments – you could be on to something there. I can’t really imagine that my profile is
exciting enough to be linked to otherwise.
Maybe it’s also our last tweet code and widgets like the one in my header.
Danny Brown says
Hmmm, I’m wondering if all the Twitter profiles are a PR5, as my one is as wll. Crazy.
My blog is a PR5, so maybe I’m just attracted the the #5? Kim, what have you gotten me started on? The quest for #6 begins now :)

I’m done with Page Rank. I did have a look and my Twitter page has a PR2 where my blog has a PR3, but when you think about what use is it. Sure, if your a paid blogger you can earn more but then if you take paid ads you get Google slapped, so again what is it’s importance?
Is it just so I can jump up and down on my office chair shouting to the world that I have a great PR. I’m sure that will impress the family and the ambulance driver when they scrap me off the floor.

I think it’s one of those things … once you get to 4 than you will want a 5.

I too have a higher twitter rank – 6 — than on my blog — 4. It’s weird — My blog used to be a 6, then dropped down to 3, and now it’s 4 — which I find odd b/c my blog’s obviously gained more content and more linkins as time’s gone on….

Hi Siel – It’s one of those things that I don’t understand very well – no matter how many times it’s explained to me or that I read about it.
The only thing I can think of is that some of the links to your site were devalued, which contributed to the page rank going down. From reading about this, it seems that many sites fluctuate up and down.
Ajith Edassery says
I had tried to write a twitter client that points to a dofollow link on profiles  it didn’t work the way I wanted… Basically if you see those twhirl/tweetdeck URLs with each tweet points to the respective URLs of those developers sites. If you create your own client and make it point to your blog, in no time you might get PR5 or 6. How’s the idea?
Kim Woodbridge says
Hi Ajith – That’s an interesting idea – I don’t know if I completely understand it though. The client would have dofollow links so if you used that client you would benefit from the links?
Chinese Girl says
I am a newbie to twitter. To learn more about what others talking about and find a way to enter conversation with similar topics I am running a lot of search, and found although the search results are made by time line but they are more from the twitter user who have higher page rank. In this aspect I think twitter PR is not entirely useless.

Thomas Retterbush Best Free Ebooks says
I just watched Google’s Matt Cutts’ video interview, “Does the PageRank of Twitter profiles matter?” I’m sure uou could find it on Youtube, if you want to watch it. It’s pretty interesting!
Anyway, I liked your post too, specially since you and Matt both confirmed what I had already suspected.
PR on Twitter Profile page is is NOT that important. Particularly since the tweeted links are all nofollow anyway. More important is interaction with your followers.
As always content rules!
Kim Woodbridge says
Hi Thomas – I agree that the page rank of a twitter profile isn’t that important. At the time that I wrote this article, I was surprised that it was higher than my website.
