Easy Comment is a Firefox add-on designed for people who comment on a lot of WordPress blogs. None of us do that, do we? Of course we do.
It only works with WordPress blogs, which seem to be most of them. It does not, however, work with WordPress blogs that are using Disqus to manage their comments.
Easy Comment is added to the bottom of the browser status bar and says ‘Easy Comment’ in yellow/orange text.
When you are on a post where you want to comment, simply click on the Easy Comment text and your name, email, url and a message will be filled into the comment form. The first time you use it you will be presented with the Preferences Screen that will ask you to fill in this information.
One thing I don’t like about this extension is it’s potential for comment abuse. I could fill in my information and a message saying “Great Post” and could comment on a number of blogs in record time. Of course, we have spam filters and moderation but I can see this add-on being used in this way. Still, I think it’s really useful and it’s worked wonderfully while I’ve been testing it.

Hi Kim,
This does sound really pretty useful (as I sit here having to fill in all the fields…). Thanks!

Yeh, this is a great addon. I am totally going to add it, as I spend a lot of time filling in my name, url, and email…
But yes, there is definitely great potential for comment spammers to increase the number of blogs they spam.
Nice tip.

This addon is essentially a manual comment spammers tool isn’t it? I have google toolbar running in FF and a single click fills in the Name, email, URI field and then I type my comment…this only saves time on the creative bit the actual comment, like you say.
Great blog!

I don’t know about this, but if you comment on my blog using it, I’d approve it. Desperado that I am. :D

I’ll give it a whirl! I wish there was something equally easy for blogger blogs. It seems half of the time I try to comment on one of those something goes wrong and I give up.

Ha! Don’t encourage that. It gets easier by the day. Then again, it just means everyone will visit an extra 10 blog with that extra time saved :)

@Lance – You’re an early bird :-) The add-on is useful.
@Shirley – I worry about the potential for abuse with this plugin. But a real person still has to use it.
@David – I think that’s the auto-fill feature. As much as I like google and many of their products I have resisted the toolbar – I’m not sure why. I think it’s because overall I don’t like toolbars.
@Betsy – I think that’s a message to come visit you :-) I will – I’m slowly getting my routine back together.
@Tracy – LOL I mispell Woodbridge all the time. I just can’t type it correctly. :-) I do the same thing with my employer’s last name – he thinks I’m an idiot.
@Gennaro – Thank you for visiting and commenting. Oh I’m not encouraging it :-) I’m just thinking of the nefarious uses ;-)
@Carla – I usually don’t run into many problems with firefox add-ons. And if I do, I just disable it. I hope you find it useful.
Kim Woodbridge says
Wow – I skipped two comments right in the middle. Sorry about that.
@Raju – If I saw your article, I copied it subconsciously ;-) I actually wrote this before the holidays but didn’t publish it until today. Firefox is awesome!
@Donace – If you add up those seconds, over time you will have …. something.
I’m with Tracy – it helps me avoid my constant errors in spelling my name ;-)
David Bradley says
Yes, it is the autofill feature, it works for me. You can disable other stuff in the toolbar. Is there a reason not to use it of which I may be unaware?
Ajith Edassery says
Pretty good utility… But I would still use my browser’s ‘remember text’ feature in which case to pick my name, email and URL it is usually a couple of keystrokes. Works well especially when you comment with one or two different names and/or URLs
Well, if you want to use those few keystrokes…

@David – Not that I know of. It’s more of an aesthetic issue for me. I don’t like the stumble toolbar either.
@Ajith – That works too. :-)

Looks like a nice plugin for those that can use it. I find that most of the places I regularly comment remember my name etc, and the ones that don’t are not WordPress blogs.
I have had to limit the number of extensions I use with FireFox to keep it stable, so alas! I won’t be trying this one.

hmmm, i’m going to try this extension out anyway. you do have a point about the spam, but i want to see how it works. thanks for passing it along. good find.
Ari Herzog says
A better alternative is what I use: Sxipper, a Firefox-only plugin that you can train to memorize form data.
Your comment boxes are atypical, but most WP blog comment fields are automatically filled in with a click of a button. (Yours require me to double-click to select from a non-Sxipper populated drop-down list of choices.)
See http://www.sxipper.com

@Madhur – Thanks! I’m glad you like it.
@Mike – I don’t think you’re a party pooper :-) I’ve been disabling and enabling add-ons all week trying to determine what is causing Firefox to startup so slowly. Sometimes less is best.
@Natural – Just don’t turn into a spammer ;-)
@Ari – I’ll have to take a look at sxipper. And, I suppose, figure out why my comment fields are atypical.
Jannie says
Oh my goodness, I’ve already got enough of you wonderful blogging buddies, don’t know if I should fill out an “easy” form to comment on more. But that could be very useful I think.

Interesting find. I am right now using one script which sits on the system tray. I just press the hotkey and it fills name, URL and email fields for me. similar to what donace is doing.

@Nihar – That sounds efficient – what is the name of the script?

Currently I am using inform enter to do any these kind of work. This one is another cool add ons if you are doing directory submission or forum posting.
So far this one is really nice for me. But I think I have come to the right place to get the right thing for blog commenting, this one definitely save a great time.
Looking forward for more time saving add ons from you. :)

@Bulk sms – Thank you for visiting and commenting. I’m glad you think the add-on is useful and that it will save you time.

Hi Sourish – You should check with the plugin developer – I am not involved with the development of it.
