This week I’ve got some Twitter, WordPress, social media, some funny stuff, and much more. I’m getting very nervous … I have less than one week until the 7 year old sleepover. I think it’s going to be fun, annoying and exhausting.
- 10 Twitter Hacks for Your WordPress Blog – These are code hacks rather than plugins and are some are similar to the one I use in the header tweet on this site. Hacks include displaying your most recent twitter entry and using twitter avatars in the comments.
- How Twitter Will Change the Way We Live – Twitter is the cover story on the new issue of Time magazine. I was hesitant to read the article but the example of live tweeting a conference and the conversations that resulted from it was a good one.
- 12 Most Unfortunate Product Names This is a list of product names that don’t translate well into English. How about some Pee Cola?
- Discover One-Mile-Radius Living – Tools to discover all of the businesses that are within walking or biking distance of where you live. I really liked this article since walking is my most frequently used method of transportation. I can get almost everything I need very close to home and support local businesses rather than big chain stores. I know, of course, that this is probably much easier to do in an urban rather than a rural environment.
- New Studies: Twitter is the Twilight Zone of Social Media – Interesting statistics on twitter usage. It’s not as important as we, the users, seem to think it is. I didn’t like the stat about 10% of the users having 90% of the conversations.
- 10 Types of Freelancers – I don’t know enough freelancers in real life to know how accurate this list is and I’m sure most people are a combination of different types. But, I still thought it was interesting. I’d say I’m primarily the loner with a bit of the social butterfly in my use of social networks.
- 25 Awesome Facebook Apps for Designers – I question calling Facebook apps awesome – some are more useful than others – but awesome? Anyway, here is a well researched list of applications for designers. And even those of use who aren’t.
- WordPress 2.8 Beta Hands on Preview – Rumor has it that WordPress 2.8 might be out on June 10th. Here is a preview by someone who’s installed it and used it.
-
E3, a huge video game conference and exposition occured this week. One of the most exciting things for me was that an updated version of the LucasArts classic, The Secret of Monkey Island, is going to be released for the PC and the Wii. And Telltale Games is going to make 5 episodes of The Tales of Monkey Island. This video is from the latter. Time to get ready for some insult sword fighting.

The title of this video is sexist but it’s so cute. This baby is SO ready to talk – she just doesn’t have the words yet.

Hi Valerie – That is an excellent idea – I hadn’t even considered leaving
them to their own devices. At one point I considered making her Dad
have the party but decided that wasn’t a great idea.

I recommend anyone new to twitter to check out “How Twitter Will Change the Way We Live “, I am a newbie to twitter still wandering why should someone care what another people had for breakfast until I read this article. Twitter is creating a new way of communication and finding super fresh information on the web, although some people are already started misusing it but still we can benefit it a lot. Thanks for the link, Kim

Hi – That’s an excellent example of a great use for twitter. I’m not sure
about the title in it changing our lives but it may change the way
we communicate and distribute information.

I love these list posts! I just realized I haven’t commented on your blog yet, although I’ve been meaning to forever. It’s, like, the most awesomest!
Ah, Monkey Island sure brings me back. I met my husband when I was trying to teach him how to play MI3. He had a computer, I had the game and the know-how. And we totally made out the whole time instead.
I can’t wait to get my hands on Guybrush’s glowing sword of hot monkey vengeance!

Hi Adrenalynn – You were just waiting for a Monkey Island video before
you would comment ;-)
Guybrush’s sword or Dominic’s?

I like the article on the twitter studies. Made me feel like less of an outsider for not using it. I’ve tried it twice now and deleted my account both times.
Mike Goad´s last blog post – It’s just a deer!
Kim Woodbridge says
Hi Mike – I think we all like reading things that reinforce our point of view.
I don’t think you should feel like an outsider though – not all online or
social media tools are for everyone. And not matter how much I like twitter there are days when I can’t stand it.

Great links. I’ve spent too much timw on twitter this past week and I’d say those twitter stats seem right. Thakns for sharing good stuff.

Hi Will – Thanks for stopping by :-) The stats probably are accurate.
The time magazine article was pretty good too – twitter and communication.

As always the videos are awesome (not that the links aren’t but i am more a visual guy ;) ). About the “Tales of Monkey Island” the only thing i can say is “epic return on an epic game”. I will try to pre order and get the goodies they are offering ;) As for the baby there is only one thing i can say, i *bet* it’s a girl ;)

Hi Stratos – Not only will there be the Tales episodes but also a re-release of Secrets of Monkey Island. It has updated graphics and voice acting but stays faithful to the original. And you will be able to switch between new and original modes while playing!! It’s going to be a Monkey Island summer.
