Well, finally. Here is the first installment of (Anti) Social Lists in 2009. I’ve meant to do one the last two weeks but I wasn’t online enough to have enough interesting links to include. This week I have information about html 5, WordPress tutorials, the WordPress 2.7 interface, PSD to HTML tutorials, freelancing, cleaning a coffeemaker and Jeff Starr’s thoughts on Twitter. I posted some of these links on Twitter, so you may have already seen them, but they are worth repeating.
- 5 Exciting Things in HTML HTML hasn’t had a major revision since 1999 back when we were all stressing about Y2K. But don’t hold your breath because HTML 5 isn’t due until 2012. The W3C definitely doesn’t work fast. HTML 5 plans to include more precise ways of describing the structure of a web page. For example, we currently use the p tag to designate a paragraph but 5 will also include tags for header, navigation footer, sidebar and content. It almost sounds like HTML 5 is going to be more blog like. Read more of the article if you are interested in this topic.
- 30 Excellent WordPress Video Tutorials – Umm … this is just what the title says. There are videos on all topics. Useful and helpful.
- WordPress 2.7: Guide to the New Interface – This site includes a link to a guide to the new WordPress 2.7 interface. The guide is a downloadable pdf.
- Thoughts on Twitter from Jeff Starr of Perishable Press – Jeff Starr has written his thoughts on Twitter. It contains a lot of truths and quite a bit of humor. I especially enjoyed the part about “whats his name” from TechCrunch who doesn’t follow anybody.
- 12 Fantastic PSD to HTML Tutorials – A couple of months ago I had a hard time locating one decent tutorial on this topic and now ThemeForest has gathered 12 all in one location. This is very useful for web designers.
- 4 Online Freelancing Jobs You Should Approach with Caution – This is SO true. I highly recommend avoiding the client who says it’s going to be an easy 10 minute job. It won’t be easy, it will take a lot longer than 10 minutes, and you will lose money. My thought is if it’s so easy, do it yourself.
- How to Clean a Coffee Maker – My coffee make was in deplorable condition and I couldn’t quite remember how to clean it. I knew it was vinegar / water combination and this article helped me do it properly. I can’t live without my coffee – I don’t drink it to stay awake, I drink it to stay alive ;-)
And, finally, a really cute photo of Capt. Courageous, which explains why it takes so long for my daughter and I to get our hats and scarves on in the morning.

nice list once more. and it looks like you can wear Capt. Courageous too :)

Jim says
Thanks for the awesome list, Kim.
I keep forgetting for some reason that CC is short for something. She’s a very photogenic cat. :-)
Jim´s last blog post – Shuffle Karma
Mike Nichols says
Thanks for the list, Kim. I particularly enjoyed the post from Jeff at Perishable Press. The remarks on online freelancing jobs could apply to any freelancing — I’ve encountered them myself in a former life. It all boils down to respect: Respect for your own time and work, and lack of respect from others who would use you like a least-cost tool.
Is this the same cat that had a pink skunk stripe painted onto it and subsequently cut out? Doesn’t seem like it’s cramped his style any!

I had kept a draft on HTML 5 for the past 1 week, but this one is really cool! It’s RWW anyway!

Christian says
Great list! You never notice how nasty your coffee is until you clean the maker for the first time… and the cat is cute. :)
Kim Woodbridge says
@Stratos – Too bad the kitty won’t let me wear her as a scarf – she would be very warm. And you’ve made the list of top commentors!!
@Jim – Yeah – CC’s photos hide her true nature ;-)
@Mike – Jeff’s site is my favorite for coding information. He deviated a bit by writing that twitter article.
Yep – that’s the punk skunk kitty. She seems to be handling it just fine.
@Raju – It’s a good article about HTML 5 – I wish it would become standard now. Apparently you can use the new tags now if you ignore IE ;-)
Kim Woodbridge says
@Christian – Hi! Great to see you. I have no idea when the coffeemaker was last cleaned – I don’t even want to think about it. Yeah – she’s a cute menace.
Donace says
HTML5?! there is a 4?…and a 3?..and 2? damn All I knew was HTML…it exists!
Yes Jeff’s post had be laughing at points was brilliant…yet still not swinging to twitter yet..I have MSN and Email for contact and a blog for my thoughts…
Captain Courageous to the rescue…..after a nap:p
Donace´s last blog post – Oh Spammer Spam ME!!!
Donace says
forgot to add coffee? eugh…cant even stand the smell :p
Donace´s last blog post – Oh Spammer Spam ME!!!
Kim Woodbridge says
@Donace – LOL – You will be assimilated and join the twitter masses. ;-)
We call the kitty CC but I named her Capt. Courageous because when we found out her she was tiny, about 8 weeks ago and was charging at Rottweiller’s at the park – like she was all bad ass ;-)
I hated coffee until I was slightly younger than you – even the smell. And then one day I suddenly loved it.
operagal says
CC looks like he is clearly playing the cute card. My little thug does the same thing, then attacks your ankle.
I am a FB vs. Twitter – I Tweet, but I don’t get the appeal. IM is better.
operagal´s last blog post – Joana Carneiro has been named Music Director of Berkeley Symphony
Ajith Edassery says
Kim, Nice mix of picks… It’s good that Anti (Social) List now addresses the needs of several types of audiences. Sometimes, it’s difficult you see – though I don’t provide lists like this, coming up with a post topic that could be of interesting to most is a big issue now :)
30 WP tips seem to be a good reference material that I can bookmark and read later for sure. I quickly went through the other posts…will read in detail later. I might need the WP 2.7 tips as well… Though, I can’t live without coffee, probably I should forward this post to the ‘concerned department and person in charge’ :)
Nihar says
Kim, thanks for sharing nice links. will check them one by one.
The image you have posted. Is that cat yours? Cat is very cute!!!

Gennaro says
Thanks for the list.
I’m wonder Twitter will continue to explode in 2009 or will another new social network develop?
Gennaro´s last blog post – 8 Presidential Inauguration Locations To Visit
Kim Woodbridge says
@operagal – Thank you for visiting and commenting. Thug is a great word for some of these cute but mischievous kitties.
@Ajith – I wasn’t trying to address different types of audiences but I’m glad you think I succeeded at it. I just collect links during the week that I come across that I think are interesting and useful and think that my readers will like them too.
@Nihar – Yes, that is my cat. ;-)
@Gennaro – That’s a really good question. Twitter still seems to be going strong and has a lot of loyal users.
Shirley says
Great links. I especially like the list of jobs that you should stay away from. This list is spot on. And in this economy, where many people are just looking for a little bit of supplementary income, this post is well-worth reading.
Shirley´s last blog post – How Does Google Find Websites That Sell Links?
Kim Woodbridge says
@Shirley – It is SO sad how true that list is. I used to be willing to take anything but some clients aren’t worth it. I’ve dropped a couple because they were too much trouble.
Jeff Starr says
Hi Kim, thank you for mentioning my article! I am amazed at how well-received it was, as it is basically nothing more than a glorified Twitter rant. ;) Perhaps I should rant like that a bit more often?
Arun | BE Folks says
Thanks for the list Kim. it was really helpful.
Arun | BE Folks´s last blog post – Move your feedburner feeds to Google’s feedburner
Kim Woodbridge says
@Jeff – Yes, rant more often ;-) Actually, I think twitter is just a really popular topic these days – write almost anything about it and people will read it. I think it also presented your readers with a different side of your personality. You’re smart AND funny :-)
@Arun – Great! I’m glad you enjoyed them.
Barbara Swafford says
Oooooh Kim – What a great list of resources. I don’t know where to start, but do know they’ll all come in handy. I love video tutorials, so I’ll probably check those out first.
Thank you so much!

@Barbara – Great! Video tutorials have become great resources.
