Two days ago I wrote about the upcoming features in WordPress 3.1. And then, bam, a required security update, version 3.0.2, has been released. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen one of these (anyone remember the 2.8 series) and I do recommend updating WordPress to address this security issue.
Upcoming Features in WordPress 3.1
WordPress 3.1 is scheduled for release on December 15th. Of course, that date is subject to change but it will be coming out soon-ish.
Here are some of the features we have to look forward to in the next version of WordPress.
How to Randomize the Images with the WordPress WP-Cycle Slideshow Plugin
Earlier this week I reviewed the WP-Cycle plugin, which is an easy to use image slideshow plugin.
One feature that it doesn’t have is a random display of the images. The images are displayed in the upload order. This isn’t such a big deal, if you know this in advance, but I didn’t know a client wanted them displayed randomly until after I had uploaded 30+ images and I didn’t want to delete them and start over.
If you want the the images displayed randomly, you will need to edit the plugin file.
How to Include and Exclude Images with the WordPress Gallery Shortcode
Almost a year ago I wrote about how a simple gallery could be added to a post or page using the WordPress Gallery Shortcode. At the time I found out about it because include and exclude were going to be added to later releases. It is now part of the shortcode.
Last week I used the gallery shortcode for the Halloweeen themes post but I didn’t want to use all of the images in the gallery – the photo of the cupcakes is in the gallery associated with that post but I wanted to exclude it because it isn’t an image of a theme.
How to Include a Post on a WordPress Static Front Page with the Thesis Theme
I work with the Thesis theme for WordPress quite a bit but I don’t think I’ve written about it before. It took me a bit to figure out how to add a post to static front page so I decided I would document what I learned.
My client wanted a static front page and then for the blog to be on a different page. No problem there – that’s managed by a WordPress setting under Settings > Reading. But she also wanted the most recent blog post on this same static page.
