Last week I was playing around with some FBML and discovered that it’s really easy to add comments to a custom tab on your Facebook fan page. All you need is the page id and a little block of code.
The most difficult part of this is finding the page ID. It used to be in the page URL but ever since custom names for pages became available it’s a little harder to find. Of course, if you don’t have 25 fans yet or haven’t made a custom URL for your fan page, it will be easier to find the page ID.
Recently I was asked how to add the Facebook Like feature to a WordPress.com blog.
Since I write about the WordPress. org or self-hosted version, I had to look this up. My work with WordPress.com is mostly with moving people to self-hosted WordPress.
Since plugins can’t be added to WordPress.com blogs and the templates can’t be modified, I honestly didn’t think I was going to find a solution for this. (Well, some extras can be purchased but I’m not going to get into the intricacies of WordPress.com in this article.)
But, I did.
For a year now we’ve been able to get custom URL’s for our Facebook profile and fan pages. Instead of something like
facebook.com/pages/someannoyingoverlylongstring
we can get
facebook.com/Anti.Social.Development
I get asked how to get one frequently so I decided to quick write this up and make the information readily available. This certainly isn’t an original post but I’m sure some will find it useful.
When I work on someone’s Facebook page, it is necessary for me to be made an Admin of the page. I can be removed after the work is completed but I am unable to do the work if I’m not an Admin.
Recently I was hired to work on a fan page and I asked the client to make me an Admin. The client didn’t know how to do that so I sent instructions. I then realized that I should write it up for an article and then I would have the link available for when I needed to send it to someone.
There are two ways to make someone an Admin of your fan page.
One of the trends on Facebook fan pages is using an oversized logo to make a bigger impact. It can be up to 200px wide by 600px high.
One of the problems with an oversized logo is determining which part will be scaled down to make the avatar for the fan page. I used to think that you had to measure out the right segment and have the area you wanted to be the avatar in a specific part of the larger logo. And maybe it used to be this way and I missed that there was a better way. Or maybe the better way is a newer feature (it’s not like Facebook changes things every other day and is poor at communication).
But there’s a really easy way to select the avatar from the larger logo.
