Wow, another week already. This week’s list has a number of articles written for Blog Action Day 08, Ari Herzog’s steps in moving from Blogger to WordPress, and Mark Hayward’s list of people to follow on Twitter (ok, ok I’m on his list).
What’s Right With My Life – 3 People I Can’t Live Without
Last week Vered at MomGrind wrote a post about being grateful and asked her readers to list three things that were right in their lives. Instead of listing the three things in the comments, I decided to write a post on the topic.
First, I have to say that I can’t stand complaining. Most of us don’t have anything all that serious to complain about. If the energy spent complaining was put into changing what was bothering us, I believe great things could be accomplished. Of course, I complain sometimes but it usually about one of three things; my ex, my lawyer, or when I have dental issues. I make a serious effort to be aware when I am complaining, to stop, and to think of solutions to resolve the problem.
WordPress – How To Create a Static Front Page
When I changed the structure of this site a couple of weeks ago by removing some pages and adding new ones, I considered having a static front page and the blog a separate area of the site. My initial thinking was that the front page should promote my professional services and that the blog should not be the primary focus. Ultimately, I decided to leave the blog as the main page because it highlights many of the things that I can do with WordPress and ideas that I am working on.
There are, however, reasons to have a static front page with WordPress and to have it set-up like a standard website with the blog being one part of it. I especially see this as working well for small businesses. For example, a childcare center could use WordPress for their website and have their main information as a static front page and then use the blog to highlight news, dates the center is closed, and parenting tips.
Support Train for Humanity – Blog Action Day 08 – Poverty
I’ve been spending some time linking to articles by Train for Humanity and sending information about their endeavors through Twitter. There has been two reasons for this:
- -Mark Hayward is one of the nicest people I’ve met online.
- -Train for Humanity is using physical fitness and social media to bring raise money for Darfur Peace and Development
At first I didn’t know what to write about for Blog Action Day and then it hit me – duh! I said to myself, “Kim, you’ve been linking to Train for Humanity and sending tweets about them so why not take the time to write an entire post.”
Stuff This in Your RSS – 10/14/08 – Popular Links on Delicious
I really like delicious for saving my bookmarks and have about 4,000 sites bookmarked there. Recently I wrote about how to create a delicious bookmarks page – mine is limited to sites that I tag with WordPress.
I also use quite a few delicious rss feeds; on particular tags, my network, and on what’s popular.
The feed this week isn’t for a site but is rather the rss feed for what’s popular on delicious. When I’m looking for ideas or sites that haven’t heard of before, I go through this feed. Continue …
