Honestly, I should have posted this at least a week ago as we are now 10 days into the World Cup. For some reason, even though I love soccer, I wasn’t that excited leading up to it. I’m not really sure why.
But now that’s here I want to watch every match. Of course, I don’t but I’m trying to see as many as I can. It’s going to be a long month ;-)
There are a number of great resources for following the World Cup matches on Facebook and Twitter.
Twitter has been having some issues recently (my tweet count has decreased by over 11,000 tweets – while not a big deal I do hope they return) and the World Cup traffic is causing a lot of “fail whales”. While the World Cup is not such a big deal here in the US, it is around the world and a lot of people are watching and tweeting about it.
- Following the hashtag #worldcup is a great way to keep up with all of the matches and latest information.
- Tweetbeat has an excellent World Cup page. It has tweets, news headlines, a countdown to the next match, and teams and groupings. If you want to follow the tweets about a specific team you can filter by that. (Go Spain!!)
- Twitter / World Cup 2010 – Twitter has a page set up for the World Cup too. It contains overall tweets and you can also filter by specific countries.
Pages
- World Cup 2010 – Soccer Jones – Good resource for all World Cup news.
- World Cup on ESPN – ESPN is actually showing ALL of the matches in the US and has really gotten into the World Cup on their Facebook page. They have a list of matches, a Team Selector, where you can pick and follow your favorite teams, and Matches, Team Selector and Game Face. Game Face will allow you to paint the face on a photo or Facebook avatar and add you favorite team’s flag.
- FourFourTwo – FourFourTwo is a soccer magazine from the UK and are good for following the World Cup on Facebook and soccer ALL the time.
- Team and Player Fan Pages – you can search for fan pages for your favorite teams and players. Of course, I’ve added Spain and Iker Casillas ;-)
Applications
- Goal Leaderboard – On the Leaderboard you can find out which teams have the most fans on Facebook and follow and support your team
- Badges – Add the badge of your favorite team to your Facebook profile. right now I have one for Spain and another for Aston Villa.
- Support the World Cup Charity – 1Goal – 1Goal is the World Cup charity. They want to provide education for 72 million children worldwide by 2015.
- FIFA Superstars – This is a fantasy sports application in which you can create your own team and see how well they do based on how players do in the World Cup matches.
Unlike the World Series, the World Cup really does involve the entire world. Are you watching any of the matches? If so, who are you supporting?

“…I should have posted this at least a week ago…”
Yup, I agree. Especially since this is one of the best resources post I’ve read about the World Cup. I know these type of posts gain momentum and garner a lot of visitor traffic.
Every year we try to keep up to date information about the Tour de France on a Squidoo lens. By the time the race is over we are receiving about 200 visitors per day.

Hi Colleen – Yeah – I don’t know what I was thinking. Or even if I was thinking ;-)
vered - blogger for hire says
Wow. Portugal 7 – North Korea 0! It’s good to stay updated. :)

Hi Vered – I actually ended up feeling a little sorry for North Korea. Neither N Korea nor Portugal are my favorite teams though, so I didn’t care too much who won that match.
Portugal vs Brazil on Thurs, however, should be very exciting.

It’s amazing what difference state of mind plays. While in contention, NK were still pretty good against portugal.
But once a couple of goals went in…they really kinda folded.
Way to go the U.S. though!
I was roaring for them to score, esp as now England have to play Germany.
Kim Woodbridge says
I don’t really like Portugal very much. I’m just not a fan of Ronaldo. But the 7 goals were really amazing. I’m looking forward to the Brazil match tomorrow.
The US game was great but I’m a bigger fan of the English team. ;-)
Sean, melbourne photographer says
I guess your like me- I’m Irish but live in Oz and do shout for the Ozzies but only a bit – I was delighted to see the French go out though, as that Henry handball kept Ireland out.
Germany England is usually a cracker, England looked half decent in the last game, played more like themselves, I think they might squeeze through.
I understand you not being a Ronaldo fan – when he first came onto the scene I loved him but now his head is far too big. Have you seen his castrol Ads on TV (maybe they arent on in the states?)
Cath Noble says
Hi Kim – You’re a football addict. I don’t watch much of it, as I can’t really see the ball without my glasses but Stuart is football mad.
Some schools are letting the kids out early to watch the England match, which is a bit OTT – why can’t folk just tape it for their kids? I could maybe understand it if it was the final but it’s not like they do the same thing for Wimbledon or anything.
In the UK, we don’t even get Rememberance Day off – instead they have it on the closest Sunday to November 11th.
Kim Woodbridge says
Hi Cath! – A little bit of an addict. Leading up to it though I wasn’t all that interested.
I think letting the kids out of school is a little much – I can see if England were in the finals or something like that. Here, the kids are already out of school and most of them don’t care that it’s even on ;-)

Nice retweet!
I’ve just saved the address – and now I’m able to know the latest results of the matches.I’m looking forward to seeing England vs Germany.I’ll be a hot play.
Kim Woodbridge says
Hi – I’m looking forward to that match too. Actually, I’m want to watch all of them :-)
Kim Woodbridge says
Hi Sean – I think Ronaldo is a selfish player. I also think he needs to work on his attitude – he is gifted with an awesome talent and he should learn to be more appreciative.
I don’t really watch tv so I haven’t seen that ad (if it even plays here).
I’m definitely rooting for England in that match. I’m for the USA today but I wouldn’t mind if Ghana won either.
Gary Byrne says
No humble pie for Kaiser Franz. A friend of mine wrote on fb that better players were beaten by a better team. Voila (there you are) as the French say – I wonder who they were cheering for back home…
Good luck to Germany against Argentina…me thinks
Kim Woodbridge says
Hi Gary – That’s a good way to put it. I wonder if things might have turned out differently if Lampard’s goal had counted.
Germany deserved to win thought.
I think Argentina can beat Germany – they just really need to tighten up their defense.
Sean, melbourne photographer says
Well there was the ridiculous decision not to award Lampard’s goal, but yeag even so I think Germany were just too clinical in attack, though for about 15 minutes it looked like England were going to overrun them.
Argentina will take some stopping now…
Kim Woodbridge says
Hi Sean – I think Germany would have won even if the goal had been allowed but I do wonder if things might have worked out differently if they had been level at 2-2.
England seems to be a bunch of really good players who aren’t all that great as a team.
Gary Byrne says
I’m impressed with your understanding of the beautiful game. I agree with all sentiments, including Argentina beating Germany – as long as they can tighten up their defence.
As for Lampard’s goal. I think England would have had more belief even if Germany had put in a third goal but there was no getting away from the fact that the defending was sloppy and contributed by formation tactics that may have lost us the game even before the first kick. Germany were lethal on the counter attack and made Terry and Upson look pedestrian. The Manager must answer up for this.
Gary Byrne says
So who are we tipping to win in South Africa? Being a romantic, I would love to see Ghana do it. They are making history right now anyway but they have a real chance to reach the semis. It’s building up to great climax.
Kim Woodbridge says
Hi Gary – Well, I want Spain but it kind of looks like Brazil to me.
I would love to see Ghana win too – I think they can defeat Uruguay, if they are having a good day but I don’t know if they could really get beyond that. Plus, Ghana has the absolute best goal celebrations ;-)

Sean, melbourne photographer says
I’d love to see an African team make it further too,
Ghana have a decent chance against Uruguay.
Spain Portugal tonight could be great, though I expect it to be too tight – we will see.
As far as winning, I am starting to get the feeling Brazil are building up and cant be stopped. I’d prefer someone new to win.
Kim Woodbridge says
Hi Sean – I would like to see someone other than Brazil win too – they just look so good right now – even when they aren’t even trying.
Gary Byrne says
Brasil V Ghana/ Argentina V Spain
Brasil V ?
?
:-)
Maybe I just don’t want to confront the obvious here! :-)
Whatever happens we are guaranteed some grrrreat football folks!!
Kim Woodbridge says
Hi Gary – I’m not sure. Although I think it will be Uruguay rather than Ghana – although I would prefer it to be Ghana.
Sean, melbourne photographer says
Well, what did you all think of Holland knocking out Brasil???
Hup Holland hup I say!!!
I dont know why, but the more the game went on, the more I wanted the dutch to win. When they missed all those chances toward the end I had a feeling brasil would snatch an equaliser, but they didnt really deserve it.
Kim Woodbridge says
Hi Sean,
I was really surprised. But Brazil really mucked it up and Holland deserved to win. I was kind of glad because I also think this increases Spain’s chances.
Gary Byrne says
Holland are deserved winners. Great for European football! What a World Cup, man! I wouldn’t put it past the Germans to beat Argentina tomorrow. Part of me would love to see the South American flare in full flow but the other part would like to see the young Germans – the “Young Turks” give them a run for their money. They could do it. Maradona is starting to really pump up his chest. Might be time to pop it!!!
Kim Woodbridge says
Hi Gary – Boy did Germany beat Argentina or what? ;-)
Sean, melbourne photographer says
Well called Gary!
What an amazing set of quarter finals! I think up till then the tournament had been OK, but wow, did we get some drama in those four games!
Spain will have to play far better than they have to beat that German side.
Merah Hitam says
Hi all, i thought that all people in the world right now addict by world cup.. doesn’t it?
.-= Merah Hitam´s last blog ..Apakah Gaya Berinternet Di Indonesia Sudah Sehat- Aman -amp Manfaat =-.
Sean, melbourne photographer says
After such a fantastic tournament, it’s a shame the final didnt live up to what went before it. Still, at least the better team won (and possibly the best team there?) and Iniesta was a deserved match winner.
What will I do with myself now that it’s all over?!
Kim Woodbridge says
Hi Sean – The final was terrible. So many fouls and the game kept stopping – no flow to it. I was so glad when Iniesta scored because I really didn’t want it to go to penalty kicks.
I’m bummed that it’s over. At least the EPL starts in a month and I can go back to watching Aston Villa. ;-)
